Cast and crew. Sydney Pollack Director. Natalie Wood Alva Starr. Robert Redford Owen Legate. Charles Bronson J. Kate Reid Hazel Starr. She was Alva Starr's little sister. Willie, Alva, and their mother lived there, with several railroad workers who were tenants. Alva Natalie Wood was what you might call the main attraction. She was about nineteen and beautiful, and all of the men were in love with her. She was a real party girl. Alva's momma, Kate Reid, owned the Starr Boardin g house and for whatever reason, used Alva to her advantage.

Owen was a mystery, but not for long. When he and Alva meet it is instant electricity. It turns out that Owen is with the railroad, and he is there to shut down the rail yard and lay off almost all of the workers. This ignites a great deal of resentment between the locals and Owen. Alva has always dreamed of getting out of Dodson, and going to New Orleans. She is drawn to Owen's good looks and his obvious superiority to the locals.

When she finds out who he is, she is furious, but soon falls in love with him. Alva's mother is constantly trying to push Alva at an old man, Mr. Johnson, who is a conductor for the railroad. He makes good money, and Alva's mom is seedy enough to use her as a meal ticket. Another man, J. Charles Bronson , who is a rail worker, is also constantly after Alva. He is kind of a brute and she stays away from him. As Owen and Alva get closer, Owen is put off by the way that Alva allows herself to be used by her mother.

He is ready to leave Dodson to go back to New Orleans and asks her to come with him. Her mother is outraged that Alva would think of her own life. She is all set to use Alva as "bait" for relocation and a new start from Mr. Owen buys her a ticket to New Orleans so she can go with him, but not knowing that he doesn't need a ticket, she thinks that he is going alone. Alva's mother knows that he wants to take Alva with him and tells him that Alva and her are moving to Jackson with Mr.

This is all revenge for the railroad, and to keep Alva as her meal ticket. Owen and Alva are kept apart and he goes back to New Orleans by himself.

In retaliation, as a last resort, Alva marries J. She steals his wallet and buys a train ticket to New Orleans. She finds Owen and they are temporarily together, until Alva's mother tracks them down and intentionally ruins everything by telling him that Alva married J.

Alva runs away in the cold rain and catches pneumonia and dies. This was an enjoyable movie about star crossed lovers being kept separated by hard times. A story of a small town girl willing to do anything to escape poverty and loneliness. Read full review. Robert Redford. Natalie Wood. Charles Bronson. What could go wrong? This is a curious film that is not heralded as a gem in the careers of its illustrious stars.

Based on a one-act play by Tennessee Williams, the setting is a small town in depression-era Mississippi, where city guy Redford meets and falls in love with local flirt Wood. The actors are terrific to watch, and there is a lovely sense of time and place. The main issue I had with the movie was that the story didn't seem to have a natural flow; it seemed to be oddly episodic.

Still, definitely worth a look. Verified purchase: Yes Condition: Pre-owned. The dvd won't play. It says not in my region Very disappointed.
