Where is negev

Its rolling hills surround large, broad valleys such as the Valley of Beersheba in which Abraham settled. The Negev's central region is rugged and cut by deep canyons in the Zin Wilderness.

Because the climate and terrain are so inhospitable "even to nomads' at least one scholar has suggested that the "valley of the shadow of death" mentioned in Psalm 23 may refer to the canyons here. The southern portion of the Negev is called the Wilderness of Paran on the Bible.

That is the Ramon Crater, where the museum explains the story and offers a breathtaking panoramic view of this unique feature of the Negev Desert. Another place in the Negev Desert often overlooked by tourists but absolutely beautiful is Ein Avdat.

From atop the valley, you can get incredible views across the desert landscape. There are beautiful hiking trails suitable for all abilities. The trails are surrounded by springs, groves of trees, wildlife, and stunning views. The Negev Desert also has some interesting historical sites. They sit next to beautiful works of nature. They are all in the far south, about 25 km north of Eilat. Another fascinating site lies on the ancient Nabatean Incense Route.

Arguably the most impressive of these is Shivta , a sprawling site that has never been conquered or destroyed. The story of the Nabateans is particularly fascinating. Rest stops were built along the route and their remains still beautify the Negev expanses today Avdat, Mamashit and others.

The modern Israeli settlement of the Negev began about years ago, when a few communities were built. These were joined by another 11 settlements whose founding members built the first homes in a single night. The Negev is defined as a desert due to the small quantities of rain that fall here less than 8 inches annually , and is divided into several regions, starting with the Be'er Sheva-Arad rift in the north, to mountain ridge in the center and the Arava and Eilat in the south.

Although Although most days of the year the Negev is barren, its expanses desolate and its river beds dry, nature here is very surprising. In winter, despite the small quantities of rain, the Negev is covered with amazing flowers, including luscious red anemones. When there are heavy storms they can cause flash flooding along the riverbeds. Today, the Negev is the gateway to the Arava desert.
